Appeal after man found unconscious

A man remains in a serious condition in hospital after being found unconscious in a cell in a garda station.

The man was detained by gardai in Tralee, Co Kerry, after he was discovered lying on a roadway in the town in the early hours of Wednesday.

Gardai were unable to wake the man, who is believed to be in his 40s, when they checked on him in a cell at around 9am.

He was taken to Kerry General Hospital before being transferred to Cork where he remains in a serious condition.

The incident has been referred to the Garda Siochana Ombudsman's Commission (GSOC).

A spokesman said: "GSOC is appealing for witnesses who were present on Staunton Row/Princess Street at the time and in particular a male person who attended at Tralee Garda Station to report the matter to contact it at 1890 600 800."
