Arrests and gun found in dissident probe

By Staff Reporter

Police in the Republic targeting dissident republican activity have arrested two people and recovered a firearm.

Gardai made the arrests and found the gun after carrying out searches in Drogheda on Wednesday.

The discovery was made after officers stopped a car on Crushrod Avenue in the town at around 3pm. The driver of the car, a woman in her 30s, was found to be in possession of a large amount of prescription tablets.

She was arrested and taken to Drogheda Garda Station under section 30 of the Offences against the State act 1939.

A follow-up raid was then carried out at a property in Boyle O'Reilly Terrace.

During the course of the search, a machine pistol handgun and ammunition were found in a parked car at the property. The Garda said that as part of additional follow-up raids, a man in his late 40s was arrested in Dundalk at approximately 9pm on Wednesday in relation to this incident.

He was also being held in custody at Drogheda Garda Station yesterday under section 30 of the Offences against the State act 1939.

Gardai said investigations are continuing.

The gun was taken away for a technical examination.
