Artist Robert Ballagh sues staff over wife's death

By Ken Sweeney

Irish artist Robert Ballagh has launched legal proceedings against three members of staff at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin relating to the treatment and death of his wife.

Betty Ballagh died two years after being initially admitted to the A&E department with a stomach complaint in February 2011.

She was discharged after a week but two weeks later, after the pain grew worse, she was admitted to St Joseph's Hospital in Raheny ahead of surgery in Beaumont.

She died that night at St Joseph's in a hospital bathroom.

Speaking last November, Mr Ballagh (68) said “key questions” remained to be answered about his wife's care.

Beaumont Hospital has since given Mr Ballagh a report into his wife's death.
