An axe-wielding raider has been arrested following an attempt to hold up a building society.

A man in his 40s was arrested a short distance from the EBS in Leixlip, Co Kildare after the attempted raid.

A Garda spokesman said the hold-up took place on Mill Lane when a man confronted a female member of staff.

The would-be robber demanded cash but was forced to flee empty handed.

The arrested man was held near the EBS and an axe was also recovered near the scene.

No-one was injured in the hold-up.

The Garda spokesman said the arrested man, aged in his early 40s, was being detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. He was taken for questioning at Leixlip Garda Station.
