Boy, 16, injured in stabbing attack

A 16-year-old boy has been stabbed as he walked home from school with friends.

The teenager suffered serious injuries in the knife attack in Drogheda, Co Louth, which is believed to have been unprovoked.

A 21-year-old suspect was arrested and remains in custody for questioning.

A Garda spokesman said the youth was returning home from school when he suffered a single knife wound.

The incident happened at Laurence Street at 4.15pm.

"He was taken by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital," he said.

"A male aged in his 20s was arrested and is currently detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at Drogheda Garda Station."

An incident room has been set up at Drogheda Garda station where investigating officers have appealed for witnesses.
