Boy, 4, killed in beauty spot crash

A child has been killed in a road accident.

Gardai said the boy, aged four, was one of nine people caught up in a car crash at a beauty spot near Patrickswell in Co Limerick.

The accident happened at Lough Gur at about 1.15pm on Monday.

The child had been travelling with a man and woman and two other children when their car was in collision with a car carrying a woman with three children.

The boy died at the scene of the crash.

Gardai from Bruff are investigating the cause of the accident and a forensic examination of the crash site is to take place.

Meanwhile, road safety chiefs have warned about increased dangers on the roads with rain showers forecasts as the heatwave comes to an end.

Roads are expected to be greasy after such a long period of dry weather followed by short bursts of rain.

And the Road Safety Authority and the Irish Farmers' Association have appealed for drivers to be cautious as the number of tractors, trailers and other farm machinery using the roads increases.
