Boy is left fighting for life after swimming pool horror

By Ralph Riegel

A young boy was last night fighting for his life after being dragged unconscious from a swimming pool in east Cork.

The three-year-old, named locally as Ronan Kennedy from Tipperary, was discovered floating in the pool in Youghal, Co Cork, shortly before 2pm yesterday.

It happened at the Quality Hotel in Redbarn, just outside the popular seaside town. It is understood a children's event was being staged near the pool complex, which is very popular with Irish families who opt for a domestic holiday.

It appears the child somehow became separated from the other youngsters he was playing with.

The youngster then apparently got into difficulty in a deeper section of the pool.

Swimmers were shocked to realise that the boy was floating face down in the pool -lifeguards and distraught members of the child's family immediately dragged him to safety.

The child was transferred by helicopter to Cork University Hospital with the local GP continuing to perform CPR.

He was later moved to Children's University Hospital, Temple Street in Dublin, for specialist paediatric care.
