Boy killed by father in tragic accident

By Caroline Crawford

Neighbours tried frantically to resuscitate a two-year-old who was fatally injured after he was knocked down in the driveway of his family home.

Tomas O'Connor died after he was hit by a 4x4 which his father was driving.

John O'Connor had jump-started the vehicle outside the family home in Derrydonnell, Oranmore, Co Galway, and was unaware his young son had left the house when he began to drive off. However, within seconds he realised something was wrong. The child's mother Maeve Ni Fhlaithearta rushed from the home and the pair discovered their only child had suffered serious injuries.

Upset locals revealed how neighbours had tried to resuscitate the boy while emergency services made their way to the scene.

A rapid response vehicle and an ambulance arrived at the home shortly before 9pm on Monday and the toddler was rushed to Galway University Hospital. However, he was pronounced dead there a short time later.

It is understood the well-liked family had only moved into the area in recent months.
