A man has been shot dead in Co Meath.

The 39-year-old was shot several times in Bettystown shortly before midnight on Monday.

He was taken from the scene at Castlemartin Drive by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda and pronounced dead shortly before 1am.

The scene remained sealed off on Tuesday morning to facilitate a Garda forensic examination.

A small van was found on fire at Eastham Road in Bettystown shortly after the shooting.

That scene was also preserved on Tuesday morning pending an examination by Garda crime scene examiners.

Gardai have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
