Drugs detectives have seized cannabis plants worth almost a quarter of a million euro.

The discovery was made during a raid on a house at Old Burrin in Carlow town on Wednesday.

Around 300 cannabis plants at various stages of growth were seized.

It is believed they have an estimated street value of 240,000 euro.

The plants have been sent for forensic analysis.

A Garda spokesman said: "As part of an ongoing investigation into the cultivation of herbal cannabis in the Carlow area, cannabis plants were seized during a search operation earlier today."
