Carey 'comfortable' in hospital

Hurling star DJ Carey is comfortable in hospital after collapsing in a garda station, his mother has said.

Maura Carey said the family did not yet know anything else about the cause of his sudden illness.

"He's comfortable, that's all that we know," she said.

The 41-year-old former Kilkenny All Star, widely regarded as the greatest hurler of his generation, became unwell while attending to some business at Kilkenny Garda station on Tuesday morning.

He was rushed by paramedics to St Luke's Hospital. There were unconfirmed reports that he had a suspected heart attack.

The sports figure, who has won five All-Ireland titles and nine All Star awards, has been hit with personal and business difficulties over the past year.

Denis Quinlan, chairman of the Young Irelands club in Gowran, Co Kilkenny, Carey's home club, said all his friends were wishing him a speedy recovery.

"He had some sort of a turn as far as we can gather," he said. "But he's seemingly comfortable in hospital. Whatever happened, we wish him a quick recovery."

Last May the Commercial Court made orders against Carey and his then partner Sarah Newman, well-known for her role in the television show Dragons` Den, for the repayment of almost 9.5 million euro to Allied Irish Banks. The debt was linked to loans for properties at the exclusive Ladycastle estate in The K Club in Co Kildare and at Mount Juliet in Kilkenny.

In recent weeks it was reported the pair had split. Carey retired from inter-county hurling in 2006 but continued to play for Young Irelands.
