Castlebar woman was fatally stabbed

A mother-of-four who was killed at her home was stabbed to death, police have said.

Noreen Kelly, 46, was found dead by one of her sons in Derrycrieve, Islandeady, near Castlebar, Co Mayo.

Another son, in his early 20s, is being questioned over the killing.

He was arrested a few miles from the house several hours after Ms Kelly's body was discovered before 2am on Wednesday morning.

A garda spokesman said a post-mortem examination by deputy state pathologist Michael Curtis revealed she died from stab wounds.

The suspect is being held at Castlebar Garda Station under section four of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Ms Kelly was separated from her husband.
