An Irish man is in intensive care in an Australian hospital after being found unconscious outside a supermarket.

The 41-year-old Co Kerry man was found lying in front of the Quick and Go convenience store in central Canberra in the early hours of Sunday morning Australian time.

A police statement said when officers arrived on scene they found the man lying on the ground with head injuries.

He was taken to Canberra Hospital where he is due to undergo emergency surgery.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is providing consular assistance.

Police said they were aware that a number of customers and staff at the Quick and Go store on the corner of Northbourne Avenue and Alinga Street may have seen what happened.

They have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
