Companies announce 130 new jobs

Some 130 jobs are to be created at a global healthcare company and a communications business.

US-based Alere is to take on 100 workers when it opens a new services centre in Galway to manage its commercial operations outside America.

And Onwave, which provides satellite broadband services, is to employ another 30 people in Mullingar and Galway as it develops a new generation of systems.

Richard Bruton, Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, announced the Alere investment and said his plans while in government will focus on cost-cutting and promoting R&D.

"Reducing business costs and promoting the innovation and R&D agenda are core to my ambitious plan to create a pro-jobs environment," he said.

"Although we have made some progress on this to date, we have much more to do so that we can see more announcements like this very positive news from Alere."

The Massachusetts healthcare company, which focuses on rapid diagnostics for cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, toxicology, oncology and women's health, will be based in the Parkmore East business campus. The investment has been backed by IDA Ireland.

Meanwhile, Onwave said it will take on the additional 30 staff over the next year at the company headquarters in Mullingar as well as offices in Galway.

The new positions will be in R&D, project management, finance, sales, information technology and customer care.
