Counties split over naming of River Boyne bridge

By Elaine Keogh

Two counties remain divided over what to call a new bridge across the River Boyne.

The new M1 bridge should be named the 'Mary McAleese Boyne Valley Bridge', according to Louth councillors who voted on the matter.

But the bridge is primarily in Co Meath where county councillors simply want to call it the 'Mary McAleese Bridge'.

There are ongoing discussions between the county managers and chairpersons of the two councils to try and resolve the issue.

Yesterday, Louth County Manager Joan Martin said the vote was carried on the casting vote of Cathaoirleach Finnan McCoy. "The next step is for this proposal to revert to Meath County Council," she said.

An earlier motion to rename it the 'Boyne Cable Bridge' was defeated on the cathaoirleach's casting vote.
