Kate drinks a Guinness

The Duke of Cambridge joked it was not often he followed the Queen into a pub as the royal couple enjoyed a party at the Guinness Storehouse last night.

William and Kate met a number of invited guests at the Gravity Bar on the seventh floor of the famous Dublin landmark.

Kate, who wore a long green dress from The Vampire's Wife, mingled and chatted with guests including actors Liam Cunningham from Game Of Thrones and Misfits star Robert Sheenan.

The couple spoke to personalities from the TV and film industry, members of the fire and rescue service, coastguard and ambulance service, as well as Garda Commissioner and former PSNI deputy chief constable Drew Harris.

The couple met dignitaries from various fields of Irish sport, culture, design, social enterprise, environment, charity and uniformed services.

Guinness master brewer Padraig McLaughlin poured Kate and William pints of Guinness that were then served by Irish international rugby player Sene Naoupu.

Kate and William both took sips before the duke carried his pint to the stage, where he made a few remarks.

Dublin-based chef Mark Moriarty created the menu for the evening while singer Loah performed a number of tracks.

The duke told the crowd: "Ladies and gentlemen, a dhaoine uaisle. Catherine and I are delighted to be here tonight and are both very grateful for (your) generous words.

"Ireland is a country that we have both heard so much about, so we are really excited to be here with you to see it first-hand ourselves.

"In coming to the Guinness Storehouse, we are retracing the footsteps of my grandmother, who was shown how to pour the perfect pint here in 2011.

"Ladies and gentlemen, let me tell you that it is not often that I find myself following the Queen to the pub.

"But I am looking forward to testing for myself the theory that Guinness tastes even better in Ireland than overseas."

Earlier the couple discussed the implications of Brexit and the peace process in Northern Ireland with Irish President Michael D Higgins during the first day of their Irish tour.

William and Kate talked about the UK's decision to leave the EU during a meeting with the head of state and his wife Sabina - after the duke and duchess paid tribute to their hosts by featuring Ireland's national colour green in their outfits.

The foursome also chatted about building on the foundations of the Good Friday Agreement.

And in a symbolic gesture, the couple called for a "brighter future" in a handwritten note left with a wreath at Dublin's Garden of Remembrance, which dedicated to all those who gave their lives for Irish freedom.

The Queen broke down barriers during her historic 2011 visit by recognising Ireland's struggle for independence.

The couple's message read: "May we never forget the lessons of history as we continue to build a brighter future together."

After the meeting at Aras an Uachtarain, the President's official residence, a spokesman for Mr Higgins confirmed Brexit was among the topics of conversation.

He said: "The couples discussed the close ties between the people of Ireland and of Great Britain.

"They also discussed the importance of continuing and deepening close relations between all of the peoples of these islands.

"President Higgins, Sabina and the royal couple spoke of the challenges ahead, including the implications of the UK's departure from the European Union and the importance of continuing to build on the foundations of the Good Friday Agreement."

William and Kate were also given a short tour of the gardens and visited the Peace Bell in the grounds of the Aras.

The Irish President said the bell was unveiled in 2008 by then-President Mary McAleese to mark the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Good Friday Agreement.

The couple's third engagement of the day was a visit to Government Buildings in Dublin, where they were greeted by Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and his partner Matt Barrett.
