Crash tragedy pair 'still critical'

An Irish couple remain in a critical condition in hospital more than a month after a car crash which killed their son and unborn child.

Police said Con Twomey, 39, and his 36-year-old wife Elber remain in Plymouth's Derriford Hospital in Devon, England, following the head-on collision in Hamelin Way, Torquay, on the afternoon of Friday July 6.

A police spokesman confirmed the couple, from the village of Meelin in Co Cork, were "stable", but added: "They remain critically ill in hospital."

Their two-year-old son Oisin died as well as their unborn daughter, who relatives said was to be named Elber Marie.

The driver of the other car, Marek Wojciechowski, was arrested at the scene but subsequently also died.

Police have been investigating whether Mr Wojciechowski's Vauxhall was travelling on the wrong side of the road when it hit the Twomeys' Volkswagen Golf.

Inquests into the deaths of Oisin and his unborn sister were opened and adjourned last month.
