Customs seize 8m illegal cigarettes
Customs have seized eight million illegal cigarettes at Dublin Port, taking the value of black market tobacco intercepted this year to 33 million euro.
The haul was discovered on Monday in a 40ft container from Spain marked paper products.
The consignment, carrying Regal, Richman and Hoop brands, had a retail value of 3.1 million euro and potential loss to the exchequer of 2.5 million euro.
A Northern Ireland-registered lorry and trailer were seized as part of the operation.
The Revenue Customs service said the latest seizure brings the total number of cigarettes intercepted this year to about 87 million euro, with a retail value of 33.2 million euro.
