Dead man had been missing for days

An Eastern European man found dead in a ditch on farmland several miles from his home had been missing for 10 days.

The body of Silvestras Stoskus, 20, from Bun Daire in Kinnegad, Co Westmeath was found partially clothed by a farmer yesterday afternoon.

The Lithuanian native was last seen leaving his home on March 8 with a Garda appeal for information on his whereabouts issued a week later on March 15.

Detectives confirmed the man's identity as a post mortem was being carried out to determine the cause of death and when and where he may have died.

The body was found in a ditch by a farmer on his land at Cornamucklagh, Broadford, Co Kildare about 10km from where the dead man had been last seen.

The man's body was removed from the field and taken to the mortuary at Naas General Hospital last night while the scene was being examined by forensic teams.

The body showed signs of head injuries.

Mr Stoskus had come to Ireland with family several years ago and had been living in Kinnegad.

He was described as 5ft 11ins, thin and with short brown hair. He had been wearing a dark grey jumper and black trousers when he left his home earlier this month.

Later, gardai confirmed a murder investigation had been launched.

Officers in Leixlip issued an appeal for witnesses or anyone who may have seen or spoken to Mr Stoskus between March 8 and 18 or who may have seen suspicious activity over the course of the 10 days at the dead man's home or in Broadford.
