Donegal pensioner left critical after attack

A man has appeared in court charged with assault causing harm to a pensioner, who is fighting for his life in a hospital in Northern Ireland.

Lee Mitchell (33), from Windmill Park, Letterkenny, Co Donegal, was accused of the attack on Friday evening on 73-year-old Patrick McLoughlin.

The incident took place at his home, where he lives alone, in Convent Road, Carndonagh.

Mr Mitchell was also charged with burglary earlier on Friday at Millbrae, Carndonagh. He was remanded yesterday at a special sitting of Buncrana District Court.

The judge remanded Mr Mitchell to remain in custody until his next appearance in Harristown District Court on June 6.

Pensioner, Mr McLoughlin, is being treated for serious injuries at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry.
