Driver held after Irishman dies in hit-and-run

Japanese police have arrested a man suspected of being involved in the hit-and-run death of an Irishman.

Teacher Alan Buckley (32), from Wilton in Cork, was found lying on a road on Honshu Island early on Sunday morning.

He was brought to hospital but pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

The Japanese media reported that a 63-year-old truck driver was arrested later on Sunday on suspicion of driving away.

Mr Buckley was an English language teacher who had been teaching in in schools Japan since July last year.

Last night a spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs said his body was to be brought back to Ireland.

Officials are liaising with Mr Buckley's family .
