Driver killed in early-hours crash

A man in his 30s has been killed in a car crash in Co Longford.

The incident happened near the village of Arva at Moyne shortly before 2am on Sunday.

The man was fatally injured when the black Ford Focus he was driving left the R198 road and hit a ditch.

It is understood he was travelling from Drumlish in the direction of Arva when the accident happened.

He was treated at the scene by emergency services personnel and taken to Cavan General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

He was the sole occupant of the car.

The stretch of road was closed to traffic after the crash and local diversions were in place.

An examination of the car and scene will be carried out by garda forensic collision investigators and a report will be prepared for the local coroner.

Investigating gardai are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
