By Lesley-Anne McKeown

A teenage footballer has died after collapsing on the pitch in Dublin.

The boy, whose name has not been released officially, played with Belvedere Football Club's under 16s squad.

The club said members were in shock at the death of a popular team-mate.

Hundreds of sympathy messages have been expressed from across Ireland and beyond.

Colin Ireland wrote on Facebook: "Deepest sympathies to his family, friends and all at Belvedere from all at Linfield FC youth academy."

A statement said: "Belvedere Football Club is mourning the death of one of our U16 players who tragically collapsed while playing for the club today.

"While all of our members are in deep shock, our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this tragic time. We ask that the privacy of the family be respected as the club supports them in grieving their boy."
