Dublin to vote on getting its own New York-style mayor

Dublin is going to get its own directly elected mayor -- if that's what people living there want.

Residents of Dublin city and county are going to vote in two years' time on whether to bring in the same system as New York and London -- with a high-profile mayor making the key decisions for the city.

The previous coalition Fianna Fail-Green Party government promised to bring in a mayor elected directly by the people, but disagreements delayed the move.

A referendum will now be held on the same day as the 2014 local and European elections in Dublin, asking if the voters want a directly elected mayor.
