Elvis festival hits Donegal

Elvis is taking to his surfboard in Donegal this weekend.

Bundoran will be turned into Las Vegas when it plays host to the third annual Elvis festival.

Presley look-a-likes will attend screenings of Presley films, perform in tribute shows, and for the first time attempt to 'hang-ten' on surfboards in an Elvis surfing competition.

After finding the right wave, participants in Elvis costumes will then be expected to shake their hips Presley-style.

"There are points for surfing and points for doing Elvis moves. The judges for the event are evenly split between champion surfers and Elvis experts. It takes a lot to make them both happy," organiser Peter Philips said last night.

Over 2,000 Presley fans are expected to attend from as far away as the US, Australia and South Africa.

"They have Elvis Presley conventions all over the world but Bundoran is seen as pretty relaxed. At Elvis conventions in America they get very upset if Elvis loo-alikes are wearing the wrong sort of belt, or if they do the wrong dance moves performing 'Suspicious Minds'," Mr Philips added.

Highlight of the festival will be a performance by the world reigning champion Elvis impersonator 'Johnny Lee Memphis'.
