Farmer dies after Mullingar slurry tank fall

Gardai and the Health and Safety Authority in the Republic were last night investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a farmer who apparently fell into a slurry tank.

Eddie Phillips (56), died on his farm at Killare, about 10 miles south of Mullingar, Co Westmeath. It happened at about 2pm yesterday.

It is understood he had been alone spreading slurry on his land and was working at a slurry tank when he apparently fell in.

Two men who were working in a field nearby pulled him out and emergency personnel were called to the scene. But efforts to revive Mr Phillips were unsuccessful.

Gardai are treating the incident as an accident. A post-mortem will be carried out to determine the exact cause of death.
