Father-of-five killed in Donegal Rally named as Fianna Fail councillor Manus Kelly
A well-known rally driver who was killed in a collision during the Donegal Rally has been named as Manus Kelly.
A second man involved in the collision has been seriously injured and is being treated at Letterkenny Hospital.
A statement from Motorsport Ireland said: "Donegal Motor Club & Motorsport Ireland would like to extend its sympathies to the family and friends of Manus Kelly who was fatally injured during a tragic accident while competing in the Donegal International Rally on Sunday 23rd June 2019.
"Manus was a three time winner of the rally and was immensely popular in the rally fraternity.
"He was elected to Donegal County Council in the recent elections and was a prominent business man in Donegal.
"Our thoughts are with his family and all affected at this time."
Mr Kelly was a Fianna Fail councillor and a father-of-five.
He was also the managing director of Tailored Facility Solutions, based in Letterkenny.
Paying tribute to Mr Kelly, Fianna Fail leader Michael Martin TD said: “He was widely respected and loved by all of the rally community here in Ireland.
“Manus had just embarked on a promising career in local politics having recently been elected to Donegal County Council representing the Fianna Fáil party.
“It was obvious throughout his recent election campaign that he was passionate and entirely committed to serving the people of the Letterkenny electoral area which he cherished.”
The party leader said his colleague had made “ huge contribution to his community”.
“He was an active fundraiser and advocate for the Letterkenny University Hospital. He had great commitment to the GAA and managed his local club, Glenswilly to Junior B success in 2016.
“He will be sorely missed by his family, friends and all those closest to him.”
A Garda spokesman said: "Gardaí are investigating the sudden death of a man following an incident at a Rally Event in Donegal on 23/6/2019.
"At approximately 12.20pm a competitor in the rally, male 40s, was fatally injured when his car was involved in a single car crash during a stage of the event in Fanad.
"His navigator (male 30s) injured in the crash was taken by ambulance to Letterkenny University Hospital.
"His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
"The matter is under investigation and the local coroner has been notified.
"The deceased has since been removed to the mortuary at Letterkenny University Hospital. A file will be prepared for the coroner."
The final stages of the rally were cancelled after the crash.
