Fisherman clinging to Donegal lobster pot saved after farmer hears cries

By Claire Williamson

A passing farmer out tending his sheep helped spark a major search and rescue operation after a fisherman became stranded when his boat capsized off the coast of Donegal.

The man, in his 30s, was left clinging to a lobster pot in Tullagh Bay, near Clonmany on the Inishowen Peninsula, after getting into difficulty on Sunday.

Mamie Grant and her son John heard the cry for help more than half-a-mile away. John raised the alarm after spotting an arm waving in the water.

Joe Joyce from Lough Swilly RNLI lifeboat was one of those involved in the rescue. "We had two RNLI lifeboats from Buncrana, the Coastguard boat from Greencastle and the rescue helicopter from Sligo," he said.

The fisherman was taken to hospital before being released last night.
