Around 100 schools are to receive free books, education minister Joe McHugh has said.

The million-euro pilot project will benefit around 15,500 rural and urban pupils and begins in September.

Education minister Joe McHugh said: “It was one of the commitments we made in relation to how we can make life easier for families in terms of cost.

“I know schools are under pressure in terms of their own commitments.”

He said he wanted to build on the initiative, adding: “It is a statement of intent, it is a message, it is a building block to look at how we can expand this in the future.”

A total of 85 euro per student will be allocated.

The minister said: “It is a start and a strong message that we want to make it easier for parents. We want to make it easier for parents who are working hard and struggling financially.”
