Garda officer killed in road crash

A Garda sergeant has been killed in a road accident after finishing a night shift.

Fergal McHugh, a father of five who was stationed at Arklow, Co Wicklow, died when his car left the main N11 as he travelled home.

The 49-year-old officer, whose son is in the Garda Reserve, was also well known and highly respected for his work with the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (Agsi).

Colleagues described Sgt McHugh as a big hearted gentleman dedicated to helping the welfare of others.

"Everybody is very upset by the whole thing," a colleague said.

"He took the welfare of members very seriously. He gave his spare time, some of it at least, to thinking about the welfare of others.

"He always had everybody's interest at heart. He was a big hearted guy - a fine gentleman."

A spokesman for Agsi offered condolences to the man's family.

He had worked with the representative body as a leading branch member in Co Wicklow for many years.

The accident happened at about 8am between exits 12 and 13, near Kiladreenan, Newtownmountkennedy, as he was travelling north to his home in Greystones.
