Gardai swoop on Mayo drug factory

Gardai have seized cannabis plants with a street value of 400,000 euro.

The haul followed a search of premises at The Square in Swinford, Co Mayo.

Officers said up to 1,000 cannabis plants were discovered at various stages of growth in a number of rooms.

The find was said to be part of an ongoing operation targeting the cultivation of cannabis plants in the Mayo area.

Gardai at Claremorris and at Swinford were involved in Friday's operation.

In a statement, they said: "The premises had been renovated into a sophisticated cannabis growing factory and extensive lighting and ventilation systems had been installed.

"A large amount of cultivation equipment was also found on the premises."

No arrests were made and investigations are continuing.
