Girl (13) seriously injured in fall from motorway bridge in Cork

A teenage girl is in a serious condition in hospital after suffering multiple injuries in a fall from a motorway bridge in Cork.

The 13-year-old girl sustained the injuries when she apparently fell from a bridge in Mahon, Cork shortly after 8am on Monday morning.

The girl did not fall onto the roadway but rather fell onto a steep embankment beside the roadway and directly underneath the bridge.

She was discovered by a shocked passerby and paramedics assessed her at the scene before she was rushed to Cork University Hospital (CUH).

Her injuries are described as serious with the girl having sustained multiple fractures and internal injuries.

However, it is hoped that her condition can be stabilised by doctors.

The teen is understood to be from the local area.

Gardai have appealed for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who may have seen the schoolgirl in the minutes before she was injured to contact them.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Blackrock Garda Station on (021) 453 6690.

The area is covered by CCTV security cameras and gardai will be studying the footage to determine the precise sequence of events that led to the teen being injured.
