Home-made bomb made safe

Irish Defence Forces have carried out a controlled explosion on a viable home-made bomb.

The improvised explosive device was discovered at Moynalty Road, Kells in Co Meath this afternoon.

An army bomb disposal unit was called out at about 4.50pm following a request from the Gardai Siochana after the discovery of a suspect package.

The area was sealed off while the device was defused.

A military spokesman said the scene was declared safe at 6.15pm and the army had returned to their base.
