House fire leaves pensioner dead

A pensioner has died in a blaze at her home.

The woman, aged in her 70s, lived alone in the house at Crosshaven, in Co Cork.

Firefighters were called at about 5am on Monday when neighbours raised the alarm.

The house in Middle Road was said to be engulfed in flames by the time the outbreak was noticed.

The elderly woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Garda technical experts launched a forensic examination but it is not believed the fire is suspicious.
