Husband’s tribute to crash death wife

A grieving husband injured in a horrific car crash that claimed the life of his “darling” wife sent an emotional tribute to her funeral from his hospital bed yesterday.

John O'Donnell from Portsalon, Co Donegal, was seriously injured in the two-car collision in which his wife, Marie (51), died last week.

The couple had been returning home from a 25th wedding anniversary celebration in the early hours of last Wednesday morning. when the tragedy happened.

Mr O'Donnell was still being treated for his injuries at Letterkenny General Hospital yesterday when his wife of 26 years was laid to rest close to their home on the Fanad peninsula.

But his sister, Mary Grant shared his moving words with hundreds of weeping mourners, led by the couple's sons, George (23) and Jonathan (21).

“It pains me so much that I am not here to lay my darling beautiful wife to rest and give support to my two wonderful boys,” he told mourners.

His described his sons as being a “tower of strength” for him.

“I am so proud of them. I know Marie is too,” he continued.

“I know she is looking down on them with one of those lovely bright smiles of hers.”

On Sunday evening, his wife's remains were brought to him at Letterkenny General Hospital so he could say his own personal farewell.
