Illegal cigarettes seized in Dublin

A massive haul of black market cigarettes worth almost 4 million euro has been seized at Dublin Port.

Customs officers said they uncovered the huge stash of nine million cigarettes in a container marked as containing disposable cups.

The seizure was part of an operation targeting the supply and sale of illegal tobacco.

A Customs spokeswoman said the haul has a potential retail value of 3.8 million euro.

If sold on the black market, it would have amounted to a potential loss of 3 million euro to the public purse in taxes.

The container was on a ship from China delivering cargo to Ireland.

Customs officers using so-called profiling techniques decided to search the contents of the container when the ship docked this morning.

The illegally-imported cigarettes were branded Benson and Hedges, according to a Customs spokeswoman.

No one has been arrested.
