Ireland's youngest mayor elected in Co Monaghan at 22

Ireland’s youngest ever mayor has been elected in Co Monaghan.

Student Darcy Lonergan - who is just 22 - was voted into the top position at Carrickmacross on Monday.

The Green Party councillor who is studying at NUI Maynooth, had been harbouring notions of running for public office from the tender age of just 19.

The new mayor said she hoped she could revive a sense of community in the area and encouraged other young people to get into politics.
