Irish department store Brown Thomas puts up Christmas trees

By Grainne Cunningham

The brave among us are still wearing sandals and summer clothes -- but in a Dublin store yesterday, they put the trimmings on the Christmas tree.

Yes, it's still August but there are only 116 shopping days until the yuletide festival and department store Brown Thomas is doing its best to make sure we'll be ready.

The three stores in Dublin, Cork and Limerick unveiled their Christmas season offerings, with Brown Thomas defending the move as being driven by consumer demand.

Yesterday, the third floor in that store was transformed into a "Christmas market", with baubles and angels.

Group buyer Edel Woods said they always get a few moans from people about how early the Christmas season starts -- but there are plenty of shoppers keen to get their decorations and tree sorted out already.

She added: "You get people giving out about it (the Christmas stock being on display) and at the same time they are asking, 'How much is that?'"
