Irish youth (16) dies in bull running fiesta

By Gerard Couzens

An Irish teenager has died after being charged by a young bull during an annual summer festival in Spain.

Diego Page (16) was rushed to hospital with severe chest injuries after the animal smashed him into a fence surrounding a bullring.

He died in hospital in the northern Spanish city of Huesca around 11am on Wednesday, around an hour-and-a-half after being admitted.

Town hall officials in Huesca cancelled the last day of the festival and ordered two days of mourning.

Diego moved to Spain from Dublin around seven years ago with his Irish father Tony and Spanish mother Mariana. He had two older brothers Jake (21) and Pablo (18).

Their home is in the village of Bolea, a short drive from Huesca. Shocked family members were making funeral arrangements yesterday.

Diego died during Huesca's San Lorenzo Fiesta, which is held every year from August 9 to 15. Partygoers dodge young bulls let loose in the bullring as part of the festivities.

A post-mortem was due to take place yesterday morning and the results released to a local court tasked with probing Diego's death. Huesca mayoress Ana Alos Lopez sent her condolences to his family.

It is thought to be the first fatal incident of its kind in Huesca.
