Latest road death takes 2017 cyclist death toll to 14
A cyclist has been killed in a road accident, taking the death toll for bike users on the roads this year to 14.
Gardai said two cars were involved in the incident when the 39-year-old came off his bike in the townland of Tonevane, near Tralee, Co Kerry, at about 8.15pm on Tuesday night.
He died in Kerry University Hospital.
Gardai said the drivers of both vehicles, a man in his early 40s and a woman in her 50s, were treated for minor injuries.
A forensic examination of the crash site is taking place and officers have appealed for witnesses.
The crash happened as campaigners gathered at the Dail to hold a vigil for cyclists killed and injured on the roads and to demanded better infrastructure and safety standards for bike users.
