Firefighters have responded to a large blaze at a shopping centre car park in Co Cork.

The blaze broke out at a multi-storey parking facility in Douglas on Saturday evening.

The Douglas Village Shopping Centre was evacuated when the fire started, and there were no initial reports of any injuries.

Several cars have reportedly been destroyed.

At 9pm there were 12 fire appliances on the scene, eight from Cork City Fire Bridge and four units from Cork County Fire Service.

Cork City Fire Brigade tweeted: “Crews working very hard in heavy smoke and fire conditions to contain fire. “Please avoid the area to allow crews to access the building.”

A Garda spokesman said: “Gardai and Fire Services are attending the scene of a fire in a multi-storey car par at Douglas Village Shopping Centre, Cork.

“The alarm was raised shortly before 7pm. Fire services are currently tackling the fire. There are no reports of any casualties at this time. The Douglas Relief Road is currently closed to traffic.”
