Man arrested and gun seized by police investigating dissident activity in Irish Republic

A 53-year-old man has been arrested by police in the Irish Republic investigating dissident republican activity.

The man was arrested after gardaí attached to the Special Detective Unit, assisted by members of the Emergency Response Unit, stopped and searched a car on the Dundalk to Ardee Road last night.

During a follow up search of a premises in Co. Louth a firearm and stolen car were recovered.

The man is being detained at Dundalk Garda station under the provisions of section 30 Offences Against the State Act 1939 as amended.

Gardaí say investigations are ongoing.
