Gardai have arrested one man and are searching for another after an armed hold-up at a midlands supermarket.

Two men wielding a hammer and a bar threatened staff at the retailer in Ardleigh, Mullingar, before making off with a sum of cash.

No-one was injured in the incident at about 9.30pm on Saturday.

A short time later a silver Renault Megane crashed into a wall at nearby Ballinderry and two men were seen running from the car.

Gardai said they arrested one man, aged in his 40s, close to the crashed car and recovered a quantity of cash.

A search is continuing for a second man.
