Man arrested over missing nanny

A man in his 20s has been arrested over the disappearance of a pregnant nanny who is missing feared murdered.

Aoife Phelan, 30, from Cashel, Ballyroan, Portlaoise, Co Laois was last seen on Thursday October 25 after meeting a friend in the town.

Gardai in Portlaoise confirmed a man had been arrested in relation to the murder of Ms Phelan.

He was detained at Portlaoise Garda station under section four of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Gardai said that Ms Phelan met a friend at the Borris Road roundabout in Portlaoise at about 6.30pm on October 25 and was last seen at 8.10pm that night when she left a friend's house on Colliers View in the town.

Ms Phelan worked as a live-in au pair at The Hermitage, Portlaoise and was in work until 6.15pm that evening.

Her family held a candlelit vigil last Friday night in the town and prayed for her safe return.

Relatives have revealed that she was four months pregnant.

Ms Phelan's employer raised concerns on Friday October 26 after she did not return to the house at The Hermitage.

Searches have been carried out at several locations in Portlaoise since Ms Phelan disappeared.
