Detectives investigating the murder of a publican and teacher have arrested a man.

The suspect, in his late 30s, is being questioned about the killing of John Kenny, 56, who was found dead in the pub he ran part-time in Oughterard, Co Galway on Sunday.

Gardai said they arrested the man in Galway city. He is being detained in Mill Street Garda station in Galway under the provisions of section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

Mr Kenny, who taught at Presentation College Athenry and kept the family business running in Oughterard, was attacked in the premises.

He was found dead on the ground floor of Kenny's bar on Sunday, reportedly discovered with his arms tied behind his back.

Mr Kenny taught German, history and religion and was heavily involved in extra-curricular activities, particularly soccer. He was also a keen swimmer.
