Man charged over fatal house fire

A 33-year-old man has been charged in connection with an arson attack in which a five-year-old girl died.

Gardai said the man will be brought before Ballinasloe District Court on Thursday morning.

Mari Connolly died after a fire broke out in her father Richard's house in Boyle, Co Roscommon, on October 3.

The youngster was found dead in an upstairs bedroom after the blaze ripped through the terraced home in the middle of the night.

Her father had been looking after her and her two sisters, Lauren, eight, and Naomi, six, who jumped to safety from a roof at the back of the property.

Meanwhile a middle-aged woman remains in garda custody in relation to the incident.

The woman, in her 50s, is being questioned at Boyle under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act 1939.

She was the fourth person to be arrested.
