Gardai in Cork have launched an investigation after a man was covered in petrol and set on fire during an attack on Monday morning.

Three men armed with a metal object, understood to be a machete, burst into a house in Lotamore in the city and assaulted a man in his twenties.

The young man was then doused in petrol and set alight.

The incident happened shortly before 4am.

Gardai and Cork City Fire Service were called to the emergency after family members raised the alarm.

The victim was rushed to Cork University Hospital after suffering burn injuries across his body.

His condition is believed to be serious and he has been left with life-changing injuries.

Gardai said no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

An incident room has been set up in Mayfield Garda station and gardai are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 021 455 8510.
