Man critically ill after assault

A man is fighting for his life after an early morning assault.

The 30-year-old was found with serious head injuries by a passer-by in the Townparks area of Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim.

He was rushed to Sligo General Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

The area has been sealed off for a technical examination.

Gardai have appealed for any witnesses or anyone in the area between midnight and 3.30am on Sunday to come forward.

Elsewhere the Garda Ombudsman is still trying to identify a man who is seriously ill in hospital after being found unconscious in a cell.

The man was taken to Pearse Street Garda Station on Friday evening when he refused to go in an ambulance after he appeared to black out outside the Arlington Hotel on Lord Edward Street, Dublin.

He was later rushed to St James' Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

The Garda Ombudsman is asking anybody with information that may be of assistance to contact it on 1890 600 800.

The man is aged his late 40s to early 50s, is white, of slight build and has greyish hair and a moustache.
