A man has died after a crash involving three cars

One man has died and two others were seriously injured after a three-car crash.

The collision happened at 5pm at Lisanurlan on the N5 between Longford and Tarmonbarry, close to Longford Town Football Club.

Gardai said three men, who were all travelling in one car, were taken to Mullingar Hospital.

A 45-year-old man was pronounced dead at the hospital and the other two, one in his 20s and the other in his 40s, are described as having serious injuries.

A Garda spokesman said: "The drivers of the other cars were treated for minor injuries and did not require hospital treatment."

Elsewhere a pedestrian in his 80s died after he was hit by a truck at Slane, Co Meath.

He was taken by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda where he was later pronounced dead.
