Man dies following Donegal car crash

By Gareth Naughton

A young man was killed when the car he was travelling in crashed into a wall outside a village near the border yesterday.

The people of Newtowncunningham, near Lifford, in Donegal were in shock following news of the accident which left two other men in hospital with serious injuries.

The man, who was in his early 20s, was named locally as Bobby Rodgers from Colehill in Newtowncunningham.

He was killed when the car he was travelling in veered off the main Letterkenny to Lifford Road at Murlough at around 1.30pm and hit the wall. The crash happened at a notorious blackspot on the N14, about 100 yards away from the family home of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given.

Mr Rodgers' death came one week after the 20th anniversary of an incident in which two men from the Colehill estate were killed when crossing the road.

“This brings it all back,” one local man said.

“He comes from an estate of about 40 houses where the families are very close knit. This is devastating for them.”
